Driving SH1 from Rakaia to Ashburton, in the Canterbury region on the East Coast of New Zealand's South Island.
Rakaia is about 50 kms south of Christchurch across the longest bridge in the southern hemisphere. The Rakaia river has some of the best salmon fishing in New Zealand, with one of the world's best examples of a braided river. Fishing season is October to April and the annual Rakaia Fishing Competition attracts anglers from all over the world. Stop and look around. West off SH1 is the rest of the town. Take a wander around and you'll be amazed at what there is. Stretch your legs and take a walk along the Rakaia River Walkway following the banks of the river.
Ashburton is a large town located a short drive from Christchurch, and is situated in the heart of the Canterbury Plains. The town is the hub of mid Canterbury, combining city facilities and vibrancy with smaller town friendliness. You'll enjoy a nationally recognised art gallery and aviation museum and a relaxing laid-back country atmosphere. Lake Hood, on the outskirts of the town is a paradise for water enthusiasts, with a wide range of activities from swimming to yachting, boating and water skiing. Enjoy coffee or dining at the lakefront restaurant and watch the world go by. Top class sporting facilities cater for all codes and include an international-standard hockey pitch, superb tennis courts and challenging golf courses.
