Driving around Timaru City, in the Canterbury region on the East Coast of New Zealand's South Island.
Canterbury is the most significant region in the South Island of New Zealand. As such, it covers a large central portion of the east coast centred around Christchurch City.
Canterbury is a mix of productive farmlands, beaches, and the snow-capped peaks of the Southern Alps. The region includes Canterbury's plains, New Zealand's most extensive plains, with intensive pastoral farming. Also in the region sits the country's highest mountain, Mount Cook. Unquestionably, Canterbury is a land of dramatic mountain ranges, cascading rivers, glacial flour-coloured lakes, rolling hills, flat plains, dramatic coastlines, glaciers, wineries, and more.
The region offers many opportunities for new and exciting activities and attractions. Akaroa, Canterbury's oldest village, offers Maori, whaling, French and British history. Also, take a cruise on Lyttelton Harbour and explore the dramatic volcanic landscape of the Port Hills. In the summer months, you may get a chance to swim with Hector Dolphins, the world's rarest dolphin.
Further north of Christchurch sits Kaikoura, where the mountains meet the sea. In addition, Kaikoura is one of the few places you can view giant sperm whales. The scenic alpine town of Hanmer Springs sits northwest of the region. Enjoy nature and adventure, or relax in the thermal hot pools here. Also, not far away in the Hurunui district, you can enjoy the many wineries of Waipara.
Further to the west in the region, the magnificent Southern Alps form a boundary between Canterbury and the West Coast. Here the town of Arthur's Pass makes a perfect base for all kinds of activities. Experience the TranzAlpine rail trip, one of the world's most spectacular train journeys from Christchurch to Greymouth.
In the south of the region, Ashburton is home to exciting activities like skiing, hot air ballooning, and salmon fishing. Further south in Timaru, you can enjoy the beachside attractions of Caroline Bay. You'll find botanic gardens, an aviary, and scenic walks.
