Driving SH6 from Brightwater to Richmond, in the Tasman Region of New Zealand's South Island.
Brightwater is a small settlement 20km southwest of Nelson and situated on both banks of the Wairoa River. The township got its name from a water-powered flour mill once located there. Brightwater was one of the early towns serving surrounding farms.
Just south of Brightwater in Spring Grove was where New Zealand's best-known scientist, Ernest Rutherford, was born. He was a Nobel Prize-winning scientist and well known as the "father of nuclear physics. Brightwater has a Lord Rutherford Birthplace memorial on the aptly named Lord Rutherford Road.ad.
Richmond is an urban centre in the Tasman District servicing the surrounding large rural population. Visitors based in Richmond can easily access cycle trails, wineries, craft breweries, art galleries, gardens, and the district's three national parks, as they are just an hour's drive from Richmond. Start on Tasman's Great Taste Cycle Trail, mountain bike in the Mt Richmond Ranges, or visit the alpine village of St Arnaud and Rainbow Ski Field.
