Driving SH1 from Dunsandel to Rakaia, in the Canterbury region on the East Coast of New Zealand's South Island.
Rakaia is about 50km south of Christchurch across the longest bridge in the southern hemisphere. The Rakaia river has some of the best salmon fishing in New Zealand, with one of the world's best examples of a braided river. Fishing season is October to April and the annual Rakaia Fishing Competition attracts anglers from all over the world. Stop and look around. West off SH1 is the rest of the town. Take a wander around and you'll be amazed at what there is. Stretch your legs and take a walk along the Rakaia River Walkway following the banks of the river.
