Driving around Hawksbury - The old Cherry Farm Psychiatric Hospital in the Otago region on the East Coast of New Zealand's South Island. Hawksbury is the old Cherry Farm Psychiatric Hospital near Dunedin.
Cherry Farm Hospital, otherwise known as Hawksbury, was a psychiatric hospital that served the Dunedin region from 1952 after the Seacliff Mental Asylum closed. Cherry Farm Hospital displayed the village system atmosphere in name and design. Cherry Farm contrasted with the harsh conditions and architecture of the fortress-like Seacliff Mental Asylum and other typical aspects of the 19th-century asylums.
Patients from Seacliff Mental Asylum relocated to Cherry Farm Hospital after Cherry Farm opened in 1952. At its peak, Cherry Farm had many hundreds of patients. Still, in later years, this number dropped to below 400.
