Driving SH1 from Amberly to Woodend, in the Canterbury region on the East Coast of New Zealand's South Island.
Amberley is a busy rural service centre located approximately 50 km north of Christchurch, in Canterbury's northern wine-growing region. Only a short distance from Amberley towards the coast is Leithfield, one of the oldest townships in the Northern Canterbury region. The town has an impressive range of cafes and shops, with wineries offering fine wine-tasting tours and gourmet meals. The area is renowned for its impressive country gardens, with a good range of accommodation options for visitors.
Woodend is a small town north of Christchurch. It is a quiet satellite town, with most people commuting there daily to work. The town is surrounded by farmland and lifestyle blocks, and within easy distance of the vineyards and fine wines of Waipara a bit further to the north. At Woodend Beach, you can relax with a wide-open sandy beach to stroll, swim or surf at, a playground and picnic area for the family, and walking and cycling tracks to explore. The township also offers a range of eateries to satisfy your appetite.
