Driving from Tuatapere to Pukemaori along Otautau Tuatapere Road, in the Southland region, on the South Coast of New Zealand's South Island.

Tuatapere sits on the edge of Fiordland's wilderness amid spectacular unspoiled scenery and lush rolling farmland. The town is the launch pad for accessing a variety of natural environments and adventure activities in Western Southland. The town is within easy reach of world-class jet boating and hiking, with the Waiau River flowing through the town before reaching Te Waewae Bay, where Hector's dolphins and whales are often seen basking. Lying on the Southern Scenic Route, the town is an increasingly popular place to stop.

Tuatapere is an ideal base for many wilderness activities such as hiking, fishing, white baiting, hunting, and jet boating. The majestic expanses of Blue Cliffs Beach and vistas of Te Waewae Bay lie just beyond the town. Tui Base Camp not only offers a range of affordable accommodations and facilities for travellers, but it is also the home base for the World Famous Tuatapere Sausage, as the town is also known as the sausage capital of New Zealand.

The town also has a rich sawmilling history and is home to a logging museum, along with many other quaint reminders of the town's pioneering history.
Southland's hub is Invercargill, with its historical buildings, and the Queen's Park, 80 hectares of tree-lined walkways and gardens. Invercargill also has plenty of friendly and high-standard accommodations.

A short drive from Invercargill is Bluff's fishing port, which is well known for its seafood, especially the famous Bluff oysters. You can catch a ferry to Stewart Island if you like bird watching. Here you'll find a refuge for native birds, where you can see kiwis in their natural environment.
