The port town of Bluff in Southland is about 30km south of Invercargill. It is home to the iconic Bluff Oyster Festival and is the gateway to Stewart Island. With a rich history and many exciting attractions, Bluff is the oldest European-settled town in New Zealand. Bluff offers many wonderful short walks, bush and coastal, and showcases fantastic scenery and views.
The town is home to a fishing fleet that harvests rock lobster, blue cod, and dredges for oysters. More fish and shellfish land at Bluff than at any other New Zealand port. Many of the locals in the fishing industry work in or out of Bluff.
Check out the maritime museum for whaling, oystering, and shipwrecks exhibits. Greenpoint Domain has a coastal walking track and a viewing platform overlooking a ship graveyard from the picnic area.
The Bluff Hill/Motupohue area gives visitors fantastic views over the Southland Plains and Foveaux Strait. It includes a well-established track network, a mountain bike track, a car park, and interpretation panels. At Stirling Point, take a photo with the signpost at the end of State Highway 1 (which runs the entire length of New Zealand). It gives the distance to the South Pole and other parts of the world.
The town is the location of a large shipping port, mainly commercial but includes the occasional cruise ship and several fishing boats. You must call into any local establishment for fresh seafood – you can't go wrong! Walk the streets to find galleries, large colourful murals throughout the town, and some significant monuments. This charming vintage town is full of surprises.
