Tuatapere sits on the edge of Fiordland's wilderness amid spectacular unspoiled scenery and lush rolling farmland. The town is the launch pad for accessing a variety of natural environments and adventure activities in Western Southland. The town is within easy reach of world-class jet boating and hiking, with the Waiau River flowing through the town before reaching Te Waewae Bay, where Hector’s dolphins and whales are often seen basking. Lying on the Southern Scenic Route, the town is an increasingly popular place to stop.

Tuatapere is an ideal base for many wilderness activities, such as hiking, fishing, white baiting, hunting, and jet boating. Blue Cliffs Beach's majestic expanses and Te Waewae Bay vistas lie just beyond the town.
